Summer Time and the livin' is easy!

I'm musing on the Summer stretching ahead of my children and thinking of things we can do in a low key easy way that are still interesting to them.
Here are some ideas:

-take a hike and paint a naturescape. Buy a canvas..it feels much more exciting!
-grow a quick yield edible plant like a radish
-try out a new recipe for dinner.Involve them at every stage from shopping for the ingredients right through to serving the meal
-make a new dessert
-play a classic board game
-create a board game with personal goals and active penaties like singing, running on the spot
-make playdo food...even 12 yr olds enjoy this..it can be really creative and is very soothing!
-find a tree to climb and climb it with them!
-Read to them each night from an adventure story
-Enjoy and cherish each precious moment

Friday the 13th!

I wasn't awake more than 1o minutes, just after 6 a.m. this morning, when I heard a large "crash" outside. Went to the front window and there was my poor Honda Accord with a caved in back door and missing window. Oh and did I mention the giant red pick up truck with the freaked out blond woman getting out of it???

That's how I started my "lucky" day, today. I've actually always considered Friday the 13th auspicious days, probably a hold over from my pagan ancestry. And I must say how lucky that this didn't happen when I or my grandchildren were in the car. There was broken glass all over the place. I shudder to think how bad it might have been.

But this does make me wonder why people who don't need to drive large vehicles for their profession are compelled to drive around taking up so much space. Set aside, for a moment, the fact that the cost of gas and the cost to the environment are phenomenal.
Emotionally, I felt as though I'd been assaulted, which just produces more stress. It took me quite awhile to remember what it was I needed to do to put things "back together". Here is a list of the process in case you find yourself in this situation and too distraught to remember the steps:

1) Make sure all parties are OK, get medical assistance if not.
2) Exchange information with the other driver about auto insurance, registration, their contact numbers and driver's license.
3) Call your insurance company for instructions.
4) Make police report even if it's not a major collision.
5) Arrange for rental car, if yours is not in driving condition.
6) Arrange for damaged car to be towed to auto body shop.
7) Go on about your day and be grateful no one was hurt. (Hopefully, that is the case).
8) AND BE MINDFUL about your driving and interactions with other drivers!!!

Happy Friday, the 13th, everyone!

Summer safety tips

Summer is such a wonderful opportunity to spend time out in nature with our families. Of course, there are all sorts of things we need to prepare for to keep our children safe and healthy. Here are just a few things we thought of:

1) Sunscreen (age appropriate formulas)
2) For extra sensitive skin use sun-filtering clothing and hats
3) Swimming lessons for toddlers (or younger) to prevent water accidents
4) Natural bug repellents for areas with high mosquito activity
5) Have lots of water around so everyone stays hydrated
6) Take advantage of all the fresh summer fruits for obvious health reasons
7) Update tetanus shots as there are sure to be many bare feet running around
8) Be sure picnic items are kept cold so they don't spoil and cause illness

Happy summer everyone. Please feel free to add more tips to our list as it's not complete,
